2012 Events

July 4: Fiction to DIE for. Cold Lake Public Library (1pm Grand Centre Branch. Teen Program)
Local young adult paranormal author, JUDITH GRAVES, shows you what makes fiction to DIE for, how to develop characters that ROCK, and how to REVAMP your work, aka revision with BITE! Be prepared for writerly battle as she introduces you to the beasties known as storyboarding and character cards. Once tamed these tools can help with plot structure and character development. Come ready to do some writing activities.

July 3: Introduction to Screenwriting. Cold Lake Public Library (6pm Grand Centre Branch. Adult Program)

Local young adult paranormal author, JUDITH GRAVES shares her experiences writing scripts for network television and offer tips on the craft of screenwriting. Graves will delve into the benefits of collaboration, including the power of Google Docs and screenwriting programs such as Scrivener, as well how to plot a script using her outline structure, The Bones of the Story. From gripping logline to epic showdown, she’ll provide you with the foundation you’ll need to create your own dreadfully cool scripts. Come ready to do some writing activities.

May 3-6th: Alberta Association of Library Technicians Annual Conference. Canmore, AB. Author Visits to DIE for. Judith Graves offers an overview of what makes a virtual author visit successful, the technology basics, and how to connect students or library patrons with authors willing to provide this wonderfully interactive (and inexpensive!) service. Popular young adult author, Shannon Delany will be dropping in via Skype to model a successful virtual visit.

April 13th: FRIDAY THE 13th Double Launch and Gothic Tea Party: Cold Lake, AB.

March 23rd: SPIRITED Launch Party and Fundraiser. Edmonton, AB. Join me, Dawn Dalton, and Halli Dee Lilburn, three Alberta authors featured in the SPIRITED anthology for one wickedly cool launch party and fundraiser event. Proceeds from the night will go to an Alberta-based literacy charity. Help us slay the scary beastie known as illiteracy and rock out while doing so…we’ll have the awesome band, Calista, providing tunes to keep our hearts racing.

February 25th: Young Authors’ Conference. Sherwood Park, AB. THE BONES OF THE STORY: Screenwriting workshops.

2011 Events

November 18-20th: Pure Speculation Fest (Edmonton). I’ll be connecting with my inner geek and being general fangirl at this amazing sci-fi/fantasy convention. Can’t wait to sit on more panels with the Steampunk Scholar and other wonderful authors. If I get my ass in gear (pun intended) there’s a chance I might actually have a steampunk costume to die for. ;)

August 11: Stettler Public Library. A 30 minute Skype visit with the library’s teen Splash Summer Reading Program talking about all things young adult authorish.

June 11: Writer’s Guild of Alberta. Calgary, AB. WGA 30 Years 2011 Conference: Writing the hiStory, Inscribing the Future. Speaking on a panel: Walking the Line; Writing for Young Readers— YA and Children’s Lit. 1:00-2:00pm. What are the writing guidelines for children’s books? How about the key differences between a middle grade and a YA novel? Or just what, exactly, appeals to teen readers and how do you tailor your writing and market it to them?  This panel of published children’s authors will provide you with some valuable insight into the realm of children’s literature. Featuring Children’s Authors: Dianne LindenGlen HuserJudith GravesHazel Hutchins.

May 28: Young Alberta Book Society’s AGM. Red Deer, AB. Imagery to DIE for: Booktrailers, vlogs and more. I will introduce the importance of engaging readers online through the use of enticing booktrailers, informative yet entertaining vlogs, as well as how to create podcast readings that leave them craving more. Beef up your social media presence using these tools and watch your promotions go viral (but not in a zombie apocalypse sorta way).

February 4-6th: Winter Wordsworth (Young Alberta Book Society). Bragg Creek, Alberta. “Imagine yourself immersed in beautiful Bragg Creek, AB with a group of like-minded peers. You’ll write. You’ll draw. You’ll create. January 28th: Virtual Author Visit. Musquodoboit Rural High School. Middle Musquodoboit, NS. Grade 7 students and I chatted about: Characters that ROCK, the writing process and had a great question and answer session (once I caught my crazy labs and tucked them away). Thanks for having me, Ms. Stewart! Your bookmarks are on the way.

January 17th: Author Visit. Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School.  Bonnyville, AB. Speaking with the school’s writing club, as well as with several junior high classes. We’ll talk drafts, revision and fiction to DIE for.

January 8th: Author Visit. Okotoks Public Library. Okotoks, AB. 1-2pm. Join Alberta-based YA author, Judith Graves, for a look at the dynamic world of young adult fiction, steps to publication and the life of a YA author. If you’re writing fiction and want more information about the publishing industry, query process, etc…this is the session for you. This event will also be available live via the RISE network. ”The RISE Network is an innovative project that helps southern Albertans access the information they need, right from their local library. By equipping 78 libraries with videoconference equipment, people in 89 municipalities can gain new knowledge and skills through a wide-range of library-based programs and information sessions.”

 

2010 Events

December 4th: Book Lovers Christmas Sale. Edmonton, AB. Edmonton Public Library, Stanley Milner Branch. Offered by the Writers Guild of Alberta, this sale featured the work of 44 Alberta authors. “1:30 pm—Bring a clove of garlic for protection, and come to listen as author Judith Graves reads from her Young Adult vampire-ish title “Under my Skin”. Note: the WGA shall not be deemed responsible for fang marks on anyone’s neck.”

November 28th: Booksigning at the Chapters on Whyte Ave. Edmonton, AB from 11:00pm-3:00pm. Part of AUTHORGANZA a series of authors being featured each Sunday in November.

November 7th: Booksigning at the Indigo in North Town Mall. Edmonton, AB from 11:00pm-2:00pm (9450 – 137 Avenue). Drop by for a chat, we’ll talk books, and NANO, and whatever. ;)

November 4th: Young Alberta Book Society and the Children’s Literature Roundtable and partnering once again to present the Celebration of Authors on Thursday, November 4, 2010. I’ll be around to present my books and chat with librarians, teachers, and readers in general.

October 5th: Young Alberta Book Society TALEBLAZERS Lit Fest. Red Deer College Confluence Campus (Rocky Mountain House, AB).

October 4th: Parkland Regional Library School PD Day (Lacombe, AB). Session on Skype Author Visits and making the most of author related videoconferencing in a library setting.

October (dates TBA): Young Alberta Book Society TALEBLAZERS Lit Fest. Touring schools and libraries across Alberta, discussing my journey from singer/songwriter to Young Adult Paranormal fiction author. September 18th: Northern Lights Library System Conference Elk Point, AB: “YA Fiction to DIE For” a quirky look at the road to publication from singer/songwriter to author of paranormal YA fiction and co-president of the Class of 2k10, a group of 23 debut YA and MG authors from Across North America.

September 14th: Backstage With A YA Writer (Cold Lake Public Library, 6pm): Sponsored by the Cold Lake Public Library and the Writer’s Guild of Alberta. “Get a glimpse at what it is to be a young adult author and the steps to get there.”

APRIL 24th: Big par-tay in my home town of Cold Lake, AB to celebrate the launch of UMS! Beantrees Coffee House was overrun with friends and family. Awesome tunage provided by “Shenanigans (all girl band). Whoopa! READ the Cold Lake Sun article and here’s the follow up.
